How to qualify as a Doctor of Chiropractic in Florida

Individuals aspiring to practice as chiropractors within the state ought to meet the minimum education requirements with subsequent certifications to confirm the same. They must also practice the profession with a license which is issued by the Florida Board of Chiropractic Medicine. There are 5 types of licenses and certifications issued by the board and they are:

  • Chiropractic Physician
  • Certified Chiropractic Physician's Assistant
  • Registered Chiropractic Assistant
  • Acupuncture Certification
  • Chiropractic Medical Faculty Certificate

Another requirement that should precede the license application is the Continuing Education Certificate. All applicants must ensure that they complete 40 hours of CE required every 2 years. Additionally FBCM does not approve any online course that offers CE. The topics covered in CE are: bullet proof documentation, risk management, case studies and clinical pearls, coding and documentation, ethics, evidence based practice, neurology, nutrition, pediatrics, ICD-10, manipulation and manual therapy, radiology, rehabilitation, sports medicine and whiplash.

Any individual found practicing chiropractics without a license is guilty and may be penalized for the crime or sentenced to a jail term.

Florida Board of Chiropractic Medicine

FBCM is a legislative and licensing establishment which was formed to ensure that each Doctor of Chiropractic practicing within the state works within the minimum acceptable requirements for safe practice.

Students and immigrant chiropractors who wish to practice within the state are advised to contact this board for more information on the requirements and undertakings. Additionally it remains the board’s sole responsibility to protect the profession’s ethics and the public interests.

The board consists of 7 members appointed by the governor and confirmed by the senate. Out of the 7, 5 members ought to be residents of the state who have been licensed chiropractors and have practiced Chiropractic within the state for a period not less than 4 years. 2 members should not be chiropractors and should not also have a history of the same or practicing any profession with a close relation to chiropractics. The remaining member should be 60 years of age or older.

Florida Chiropractic Association

The FCA is a member association whose primary role is to protect the welfare of its individual members. The association offers its services to all its members regardless of philosophy or level of education. FCA also advocates that chiropractic is an individual and distinct healing arts science.
